The Cream of the Crop

If we could somehow break through the barrier of time, and create an all-time Harambee Stars (or a Harambee All-Stars?), what a team would that be. Some of them played in the best clubs in the world, while others made (or are making) respectable domestic careers, often leading the national team to new heights. Check football betting at 10bet, where you can find the latest fixtures and odds, as well as historical data to help you along the way. Despite corruption scandals and lack of resources, Kenyan football thrives. While the best betting sites in Kenya calculate the odds next year, let’s remember some of the best players the country has ever had. Some of them are still playing, making history, and enchanting the crowds at home and abroad.

Mahmoud Abbas

Abbas was a legendary goalkeeper who played for the Leopards and defended the national team. With the Leopards, he won the CECAFA three times in a row. He started his career when he was 19, in the Harambee Stars. Mahmoud Abbas is considered the best goalkeeper to ever play for the Kenyan national squad. His reflexes and ability to save impossible penalties are fondly remembered until today. The goalkeeper had the best moments of his career during the 80s.

Bobby Ogola

The defender Bobby Ogola has an enviable career in Kenyan football. One of the best defenders of his generation, Ogola even turned into a TV star when he was the main character in a TV series during the 80s. This little career detour earned him the nickname of Six Million Dollar Man. After retiring, Ogola became a successful coach for Gor Mahia.

Victor Wanyama

Victor Wanyama is a recently retired midfielder who has defended the Harambee Stars on several occasions. Lately, he was the national team captain and was playing in Canada for the CF Montreal. He played in four European teams, two of them from the English Premier League. In 2016, he signed with Tottenham for £11 million.

Joe Kadenge

Kadenge was a national hero of his time, both for his sheer talent and charisma. Fans and specialists argue he’s the best of all time in Kenya. Kadenge had a domestic career and was there when the Leopards played their first official competition in 1968. He coached Tikiri FC before going back to the field for Maragoli FC in 1975. He coached the Harambee Stars during the 2002 CECAFA, leading the national squad to win that competition.

Dennis Oliech

Oliech’s phenomenal performances granted him the nickname “The Menace”. The striker was well worthy of the nickname, and in his best moments, he was praised for his speed, technique, and sense of opportunity. His contribution was decisive for the national team to join the AFCON 2004. After years playing in the Arab and French leagues, The Menace is back home, playing for Gor Mahia.

Michael Olunga

Michael Olunga is one of the strongest players of his generation and had a decisive participation in the 2019 AFCON. The matches against Ethiopia, Egypt, and Tanzania could have finished differently without him. One of his best moments includes a hat-trick scored for the Spanish team, Girona.

Jesse Were

Jesse was a star for the Brewers in 2015 when he won the KPL Golden Boot for the team. Later, he signed with the Zambian club ZESCO United, where he repeated the feat. He’s still playing for ZESCO United as the best scorer ever in the club.

Allan Wanga

The Kenyan striker first came to the spotlight in the Angolan Premier League in 2010. He won the competition playing for Petro Atletico. In 2013, he was part of the national squad that brought CECAFA’s title back home. Wanga has been playing for the AFC Leopards ever since.

Francis Kahata

The offensive midfielder was an influential force in the team, driving the Harambee Stars to the AFCON in 2019. The Kenyan national team couldn’t qualify for an AFCON for 15 years, so Kenyan fans remember him well. The competition didn’t go well for the squad, but Kahata still shone. Kahata has recently signed with the Tanzanian Simba SC for the next season.
